Ruggedized composite materials
M Ship is developing Tough Ship Technology to toughen composite materials that will withstand the rigors and abuse of a wartime environment. These ruggedized composites will be used in the construction of "Tough Ship" vessels for military operations.
Tough Ship materials are a proprietary blend of fibers and specially formulated resins. Together, these materials will increase strength and provide enhanced ballistics protection without compromising performance. In addition to theses new materials, the overall laminate and structural design of the ships is focused on military toughness. This holistic approach will allow the use of the latest composite technology to enhance the safety and performance of the warfighter.
The new composites will be used in vessels designed as replacements for existing vessels, such as rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs), Mark V Special Operations Craft (SOC) and other vessels currently constructed of fiberglass, aluminum and steel.
The result will be a safer, longer-lasting vessel that will offer:
- Greater speed
- Larger payload fraction
- Increased protection for the warfighter
M Ship is currently conducting research and development of these composites, blending existing materials in new ways to create fundamentally new capabilities, just as it applied existing technologies and designs in a new way to develop the revolutionary M-hull technology
The concept of Tough Ship technology derived from conversations with Rear Admiral Donald K. Bullard (ret.), the former head of the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, who described the need for tough, ruggedized materials that can "take abuse in a wartime environment, like a Toughbook."
